Places to Visit in Mizoram, and How to Get There
The best places to visit in Mizoram, from Aizawl and Reiek to Vantawng Falls and Phawngpui, plus the Inner Line Permit, how to get there and the best time to go.

Mizoram is a hill state in Northeast India, between Myanmar and Bangladesh. It is green, quiet and welcoming, with hilltop towns, waterfalls, forests and mountain views. Here are the places worth seeing, and what to sort out before you go.
What are the best places to visit in Mizoram?
- Aizawl. The capital, built along hill ridges. See Solomon's Temple, a large white church on the edge of the city, shop at Bara Bazar, and watch the city lights from Durtlang. Aizawl is also known for its quiet roads: drivers wait their turn and rarely honk.
- Reiek. A hill and village about 30 km from Aizawl. Walk up Reiek Mountain (1,548 m) for views of the valleys, visit the model village, and explore the caves on the way. Reiek won gold in India's Best Tourism Village awards in 2023.
- Hmuifang. A forested hill about 50 km from Aizawl, at 1,619 m, with misty forest views.
- Sakawrhmuituai. A hill near Aizawl with wide views. On New Year's Eve 2025, the Tourism Department held a "last sunset of the year" event here.
- Vantawng Falls. One of Mizoram's best-known waterfalls, about 5 km south of the town of Thenzawl.
- Champhai. A town near the Myanmar border, surrounded by wide paddy fields.
- Phawngpui. Mizoram's highest peak, the "Blue Mountain", near the Myanmar border, known for its orchids and rhododendrons.
- Dampa Tiger Reserve. A forest reserve on the Bangladesh border, about 127 km from Aizawl.
- Palak Dil. The biggest lake in Mizoram, in the south of the state.
On the road, look out for honesty shops. Along some highways, such as the road towards Seling, farmers leave fruit and vegetables with a price list and a money box. These shops without shopkeepers are called nghah loh dawr.
Do you need a permit to visit Mizoram?
Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit (ILP). You can:
- apply online through the Mizoram Police ILP portal
- get one on arrival at Lengpui Airport
- apply at a Mizoram government liaison office in New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong or Silchar
Carry a photo ID, and check the current fee and validity before you travel.
Foreign visitors do not need a Protected Area Permit. You must register with the Foreigners Registration Officer, the Superintendent of Police (CID/SB) in Aizawl, within 24 hours of arrival. Citizens of Afghanistan, China and Pakistan need prior approval from India's Ministry of Home Affairs.
How do you get to Mizoram?
- By air. Lengpui Airport is about 32 km from Aizawl, roughly an hour by taxi. There are flights from cities including Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi.
- By train. Since 13 September 2025, the Bairabi–Sairang railway has connected Mizoram to India's rail network. Trains run from Sairang, near Aizawl, to Delhi (Rajdhani Express), Kolkata and Guwahati. They are popular, so book early.
- By road. Shared jeeps, called sumos, run from Silchar in Assam to Aizawl in about 7–8 hours.
When is the best time to visit Mizoram?
October to March, the dry season. December and January are cool, with almost no rain. Avoid the monsoon, when mountain roads can be difficult.
Plan around a festival if you can:
- Christmas and New Year. Carols, lengkhawm, decorated streets and church feasts. Read Christmas in Mizoram.
- Chapchar Kut in March. Mizoram's spring festival, with dances and traditional dress. Read Chapchar Kut: Mizoram's Grand Spring Festival.
What else is good to know before you go?
- Sundays are quiet. Many shops close and fewer shared jeeps run, so plan your travel days around them.
- Getting around. Shared jeeps (sumos) connect the main towns, and taxis can be hired for day trips.
- Carry some cash. UPI payments are widely accepted in Aizawl, but mobile networks can be weak outside the towns.
- Pack a warm layer. Evenings in the hills are cool, especially in winter.
- Know the liquor law. Mizoram has a liquor prohibition law, so don't expect bars or alcohol shops.
- Dress smartly for church. If you visit a service, many women wear a puan, and men wear trousers and a collared shirt.
