Chapchar Kut is the most famous and vibrant Mizo festival, celebrated in early March after the arduous work of jungle clearing for jhum (shifting) cultivation is complete.

The festival is a explosion of color, music, and dance. Women wear their finest puan (traditional wrap-around skirts) in brilliant reds, greens, and blacks. Men don traditional attire including the distinctive Mizo headgear. The air fills with the sounds of drums, gongs, and traditional songs.

The highlight is the traditional dances, performed by hundreds of dancers moving in perfect synchronization. The Cheraw (bamboo dance), Khuallam, and Chheihlam are all performed, each with its own significance and beauty.

Beyond the spectacle, Chapchar Kut is about community. Families prepare special foods, homes welcome visitors, and for a few days, the entire state comes together in celebration. It is a reminder of the agricultural roots of Mizo society and the joy that follows hard work.
