A familiar alphabet with four new letters
Mizo is written in the Roman alphabet and has 25 letters. Twenty-one look like English letters. The four to focus on are Aw, Ch, Ng and Ṭ. Aw sounds like the aw in “law”, Ch like the ch in “church”, and Ng like the ng in “sing”. Ṭ is a t made with the tongue curled back. Each has its own place in the alphabet.
Mizo skips C, Q, W, X and Y as letters of their own. The c appears inside Ch. Aw, Ch and Ng each count as one letter, even though they use two characters. Recognising these combinations helps you read the words in the course as Mizo letters rather than counting each English character separately.
How to practise
Start with the familiar letters, then listen to the recordings of the four new ones. Repeat each sound and return to any that needs another try. The five short bites move from recognising letters to checking sounds, counting letters and filling gaps in the alphabet order. The complete alphabet reference lets you hear each letter again.
