Mizo is written in the Roman alphabet and has 25 letters. 21 of them look just like English letters, so most English speakers already know them. Only four are new: Aw, Ch, Ng and Ṭ.

What are the four new Mizo letters?

    • Aw – sounds like the aw in "law". Example: Aw (yes)
    • Ch – sounds like the ch in "church". Example: Chibai (hello)
    • Ng – sounds like the ng in "sing". Example: Ngai (like, want)
    • Ṭ – a t made with the tongue curled back. Example: A ṭha e (it's okay, good)

Which English letters does Mizo not use?

Mizo skips C, Q, W, X and Y as letters of their own. The c only appears inside the letter Ch.

Why does "Chaw" have only two letters?

Because Ch and Aw each count as one letter. Chaw (food) is spelled Ch + Aw, and Zing (morning) is Z + I + Ng.

What is the Mizo alphabet order?

Each new letter sits right after its partner:

    A, Aw, B, Ch, D, E, F, G, Ng, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, Ṭ, U, V, Z
