Is Mizo Hard to Learn?
What makes Mizo easy for English speakers, what takes practice, and how to make your first steps simple.

Mizo is easier to start than many people expect. Some things take practice, but the first steps are simple.
What makes Mizo easier?
- It uses the Roman alphabet. You do not need to learn a new script. The alphabet has 25 letters, and only four are new for English speakers. See the Mizo alphabet guide.
- Words look familiar. Once you know the letters, you can read words like Chibai (hello) right away.
- Short phrases go a long way. A greeting and Ka lawm e (thank you) already help in daily life.
What takes practice?
- New sounds. Some sounds do not exist in English, such as the ṭ in Mangṭha. You learn them best by listening.
- Fewer resources. There are not as many apps, books and videos as for bigger languages, so a clear path helps.
How do you make it easier?
- Learn a few words at a time, starting with greetings.
- Listen to native-speaker audio before you say a word.
- Practise a little every day instead of a lot at once.
Start with the free Lesson 1. It breaks the first words into six short steps, so you can try Mizo in a few minutes.
